Die ikonische, experimentelle Death Metal-Band JOB FOR A COWBOY wird ihr lang erwartetes neues Album Moon Healer am 23. Februar 2024 über Metal Blade Records veröffentlichen. Die Veröffentlichung markiert das erste neue Album der Band seit einem Jahrzehnt!
Moon Healer ist eine lebendige Illustration dessen, was passiert, wenn Kreativität, Aggression und Unbeständigkeit zum ersten Mal seit Jahren wieder aufeinandertreffen. Wie das von der Kritik gelobte, 2014 erschienene Album Sun Eater ist Moon Healer musikalisch facettenreich, unverschämt brutal und überzeugend konzeptionell. Mit einem frisch aufgefrischten und neu inspirierten Line-up, bestehend aus Frontmann und Mitbegründer Jonny Davy, den Gitarristen Tony Sannicandro und Al Glassman, Bassist Nick Schendzielos und Schlagzeuger (seit 2020) Navene Koperweis, knüpft die Band nahtlos an die Erfolge von „Sun Eater“ an.
Davy erklärt die Wartezeit:
„I had to take a step back in the band for family. It was the catalyst that eventually created a fork in the road for all of us. We all drifted into our separate paths. Fatherhood, additional music projects, academic degrees, and careers outside the band took priority and life’s focus,“ so the band agreed on a prolonged hiatus, but with the door open for a return. „Everything lined up for us to collaborate on a new project together; it was time to cross the threshold for something new.“
Im Vergleich zu früheren Werken ist Moon Healer so knochenbrecherisch wie JOB FOR A COWBOY es je war. Aber es ist konsequenter und konzeptioneller, komponiert mit dem größten Enthusiasmus und Vertrauen. Wenn es um die lyrische Genese von Songs wie „Beyond The Chemical Doorway“, „Grinding Wheels Of Ophanim“ und „Into The Crystalline Crypts“ geht, werden Davys Worte kryptisch und elliptisch – teils Philip K. Dick, teils Timothy Leary. „Ich stelle mir dies als ein Death-Metal-Album vor, das in der mystischen Enge eines Alchemistenlabors entstanden ist. Die Musik wirkt wie ein potenter Zaubertrank, der halluzinogene Reisen auslöst, die die Geheimnisse des Universums entschlüsseln.“
JOB FOR A COWBOY hat sich genauso tief in die Musik von Moon Healer vertieft, wie Davy in den Gesang und die Texte. Die Band reiste nach Sanford, Florida, um mit dem Produzenten Jason Suecof (Death Angel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide) in dessen Audiohammer Studios aufzunehmen. „Wir haben das gleiche Ritual mit Jason aus einer Vielzahl von Gründen durchlaufen. Aber der offensichtlichste Grund ist, dass er ein meisterhafter Songschreiber, Gitarrist und sogar Sänger ist. Er hat ein Ohr für Ideen, das scheinbar nur wenige haben. Er versteht vollkommen, woher wir als Band kommen.“
Moon Healer ist auch das erste JOB FOR A COWBOY-Album, auf dem Session-Drummer Koperweis (ex-Animosity) zu hören ist. Davy arbeitete zuvor mit Koperweis bei dem Progressive-Death-Metal-Nebenprojekt Fleshwrought zusammen, das 2010 Dementia/Dyslexia über Metal Blade veröffentlichte. Koperweis arbeitete auch als Session-Schlagzeuger für Machine Head und Whitechapel und ist derzeit in der Band Entheos aktiv, deren drittes Album im März 2023 bei Metal Blade erschien.
Davy erzählt weiter:
„On MoonHealer, we explore a concept centered around a close friend who embarked on a relentless quest for profound enlightenment through the incessant abuse of hallucinogenic drugs, leading to a severe disconnection from reality due to the toll it took on their mental health. The song ‚The Forever Rot‘ touches on their beliefs that human evolution and development have somehow led to the restriction of perceiving otherworldly or inter-dimensional realities and religious entities. It delves into their disconnection from the physical world and the notion that true vitality may be found in the ability to self-destruct and recreate. That some of the drugs they consumed opened these realities that evolution has closed the door on.“
