SIX FEET UNDER stellen heute ihre neueste Single „Ascension“ vor. Der vernichtende neue Track stammt aus dem kommenden vierzehnten Studioalbum der Band, Killing For Revenge, das am 10. Mai über Metal Blade Records erscheinen wird.
„Killing For Revenge“ ist ein knorriges Biest von einem Album, das nichts für schwache Nerven ist. Der legendäre Frontmann Chris Barnes sorgt mit seinen markanten, gutturalen Vocals für albtraumhafte Bilder. Sowohl der Titel des Albums als auch das düstere, detaillierte, rot gefärbte Cover des Künstlers Vince Locke sind die perfekten Behältnisse für die Brutalität des Albums.
SIX FEET UNDER wurden als Nebenprojekt von Barnes während seiner letzten Jahre bei der von ihm mitgegründeten Band CANNIBAL CORPSE gegründet. 1995, zeitgleich mit der Veröffentlichung des Debüts Haunted, wurde SIX FEET UNDER zum alleinigen Fokus des Frontmanns. Von der ursprünglichen Inkarnation von SIX FEET UNDER ist nur noch Barnes übrig, aber die Qualität ist bemerkenswert konstant geblieben. Die aktuelle Besetzung mit Barnes, den Gitarristen Jack Owen (Ex-CANNIBAL CORPSE) und Ray Suhy, dem Bassisten Jeff Hughell und dem Schlagzeuger Marco Pitruzzella bildet eine verheerende Einheit.

Killing For Revenge ist das zweite gemeinsame Album von Barnes und Owen seit ihrer Wiedervereinigung für das 2020 erschienene Album Nightmares Of The Decomposed. Owen hat die Platte auch produziert. Die Chemie zwischen den fünf Männern ist spürbar; wenn man sich Killing for Revenge anhört, könnte man annehmen, dass sie sich für ein paar Monate zurückgezogen haben und in kreativer Abgeschiedenheit an dem Album gefeilt haben. Das ist nicht der Fall.
Chris Barnes erzählt:
„We all recorded it on our own, in different parts of the country since we’re all spread out. I think the most important thing is to put everybody in a comfortable space so that they get a great performance. That’s what you want to capture. It’s really hard nowadays to afford everyone being in the studio recording like we used to back in the ’90s. It can be done just as effectively this way.“
Jack Owen über die Single:
„I wrote the music first, with no lyrical ideas in mind. I wanted a small musical phrase that linked the parts together throughout the song, so I wrote a little chord/drum fill thing to segue riffs from the start of the song, through to the end. It turned out sounding like early Possessed, according to listeners. I have an archive of riffs, so I dug for some fast-picking parts that would be easy to sing to.
„I had recently found a vinyl box set of works by Shakespeare, and listened to Macbeth,“ he continues, „It’s pretty violent! So while ‚Ascension‘ isn’t a direct interpretation of the story, it’s my take on the classic tale of influence, revenge, and the fate you face. As with many of the songs, Chris lent his lyrical talents to make the song that much better.“
