Die Ikonen des Goth und Doom Metal aus Großbritanien, PARADISE LOST, haben mit „Serpent On The Cross“ die zweite Single aus ihrem lang erwarteten, siebzehnten Album „Ascension“ veröffentlicht, das am 19. September über Nuclear Blast Records erscheint.
PARADISE LOSTs erstes Album seit fünf Jahren, nach dem 2020 veröffentlichten und von der Kritik gefeierten „Obsidian“, wurde von Gitarrist Gregor Mackintosh produziert und von Lawrence Mackrory gemixt und gemastert. „Ascension“ ist ein eindrucksvolles Zeugnis für die Langlebigkeit und Relevanz der Band über ihre mehr als 35-jährige Karriere hinweg und vereint all die charakteristischen Elemente aus Gothic, Death und Doom, die Fans auf diesem Weg schätzen gelernt haben.

Das Cover von „Ascension“ zeigt passend dazu das Gemälde The Court of Death (1870–1902) des renommierten britischen Künstlers George Frederic Watts, das heute in der Tate Gallery in London hängt. Es zeigt den Tod als thronenden Engel, flankiert von den allegorischen Gestalten Stille und Mysterium, die Sonnenaufgang und den Stern der Hoffnung bewachen, während ein Krieger sein Schwert und ein Herzog seine Krone niederlegt – eine bildgewaltige Darstellung, dass weltlicher Status keinen Schutz bietet. Diese düstere, prophetische Vision spiegelt die dunklen, gequälten Klanglandschaften von „Ascension“ wider, in denen klagende Strophen auf unheilvolle, schwere Riffs treffen.
