SHADOWQUEST ist eine neue schwedische Power Metal-Sensation mit großen Namen in ihren Reihen. Aber nicht nur die Tatsache, dass hier (ehemalige) Mitglieder von STRATOVARIUS, SAINT DAEMON, BLOODBOUND und DIONYSUS am Werke sind, macht das Debüt „Armoured IV Pain“ interessant, auch die Musik selbst überzeugt auf ganzer Linie. Wir sprachen mit Mastermind Ronny Milianowicz über das Album und Zukunftspläne, aber auch andere Mitglieder schalteten sich in das Gespräch mit ein.

Hey Jungs, euer erstes Album „Armoured IV Pain“ wird in Kürze erscheinen. Wie fühlt ihr euch damit jetzt?
Ronny Milianowicz: Es fühlt sich eigentlich wie mein erstes Album an! Es war das erste Mal, dass ich alle Aufnahmen und den Mix selbst gemacht habe. Seht einfach mal auf www.studioseven.se
Kannst du mir erzählen wie und wann die Band gegründet wurde und wer war der Initiator der Sache?
Ronny: Ich habe die komplette Musik mit Ragnar Widerberg geschrieben und habe die Drums mit ihm aufgenommen, Kaspar hat alle Texte geschrieben. Ich hatte schon vorab geplant mit wem ich zusammen arbeiten möchte und alle sagten sofort ja. Am Anfang war eigentlich zum Spaß eine Art Solo-Album geplant. Aber die Chemie hat schnell gezeigt, dass wir das auch alle live spielen wollen. Ich hatte abgesehen von Jari Kainulainen schon mit allen zusammengearbeitet, aber auch er hatte noch nicht mal seinen Bass fertig aufgenommen, als er zu mir meinte, dass wir damit auf die Bühne müssen.
Ihr spielt puren Power Metal – sehr abwechslungsreich und eingängig, aber ich habe das Gefühl ihr hattet nie das Ziel das Genre zu revolutionieren, habe ich da recht?
Ronny: Auf den ersten Blick wirkt es vielleicht wie ein typisches Power Metal-Album, aber wenn du genau hin hörst, wirst du einiges finden, das ziemlich neu ist. Wenn jemand die gleiche Akkord-Folge wie in „All One“ findet, dann ist er die erste Person, die von mir ein T-Shirt zugeschickt bekommt.
Wie viel Einfluss haben eure anderen bzw. vorherigen Bands auf das Songwriting gehabt? Ich meine „Live Again“ hat einige Ähnlichkeiten mit STRATOVARIUS.
Jari Kainulainen: Ich denke eher, dass es mehr vom DIONYSUS-Song „Anima Mundi“ rührt. Ronny und Kaspar haben den Song bereits für diese Band geschrieben und wenn du das weißt, wirst du den Einfluss sicher auch hören.
Ihr kommt ja doch von verschiedenen Stilrichtungen, vor allem Ragnar und Peter, wie schwer war es einen gemeinsamen Bandsound zu finden?
Ronny: Ragnar war Original-Gitarrist von SAINT DAEMON und ich habe die gesamte Musik mit ihm geschrieben, also soweit sind wir nicht auseinander. Peter war ja auch bei SINGERGY, was ja auch eine ähnliche Richtung ist. Ich denke wir lieben alle die Musik und sind offen für alles.
Wann habt ihr die Songs geschrieben und war es eine komplette Bandarbeit?
Ronny: Nein, ich habe die Musik alleine mit Ragnar geschrieben, das war im vergangenen Jahr, denke ich.
War es denn schwer alle zusammen zu bekommen um die Songs aufzunehmen?
Ronny: Nicht wirklich, vier der Mitglieder wohnen nur gut eine Stunde voneinander entfernt. Und Kaspar und Jari knapp vier Stunden vom Studio in Örebro, Schweden entfernt.
Da sicher alle auch mit ihren anderen Bands beschäftigt sind, frage ich mich ob die Möglichkeit besteht, bald eine komplette Tour zusammen zu bekommen…
Ronny: Klar, wir haben schon ein paar Festivals gebucht und werden BLIND GUARDIAN in Schweden supporten!
Warum habt ihr im Albumtitel ein „IV“ statt des „For“ gewählt?
Ronny: Es sieht cooler aus und ist ästhetischer für das Auge.
Es sieht so aus, als hättet ihr viel Spaß beim Drehen des „Live Again“ Videos gehabt. Was kannst du mir davon erzählen und worum geht es?
Ronny: Der Song ist Timo Tolkki gewidmet, denn er hat uns durch eine raue Zeit beim Aufnehmen geholfen. Er war zu der Zeit als ich für AVALON mit Elize Ryd aufgenommen habe. Das Video ist sehr lustig, hat aber auch seine ernste Seite in den Lyrics. Es geht um das Zurückkehren ins Leben nach einem großen Versagen in deinem Leben.
Wie schwer war es für Patrik die Lyrics und Vocal-Lines von BLOODBOUND zu trennen?
Patrik Johansson: Das war ziemlich einfach, da bereits alles fertig geschrieben war.
Was ist eigentlich mit DINOYSUS passiert? Es gab soweit ich weiß nie eine offizielle Auflösung…
Ronny: Ich weiß es echt nicht, Kaspar und ich stiegen vor der Tour mit JON OLIVA aus. Danach hatte ich keine Einsicht mehr in die Band.
Ihr habt bereits einen Teaser zu einem Crowdfunding-Projekt für ein zweites Album gestartet, so sieht es aus als ob nicht viel Zeit bis zum nächsten Werk vergehen wird?
Ronny: Nein, wir haben schon alle Songs für das zweite Album geschrieben!
Wie sehen also die Pläne für 2015 und 2016 aus?
Ronny: Dutzende Konzerte und Festivals spielen und dann Anfang 2016 das neue Album aufnehmen.

Hi guys, your first record „Armoured IV Pain“ will be out soon. How do you feel now?
Ronny: It actually feels like my first album!

Can you please tell me how and when the band was founded and who was the first initiator of it?
Ronny: I wrote all music with Ragnar and recorded the drums and Kaspar wrote the lyrics. I had already planned who I wanted to work With and all members Said yes. From the beginning it was just for the fun of it like a solo album but the chemestry within the band made it very clear that everybody wanted to play live! I had worked with all people before exept Jari but he hadnt even finnished the bass before he said Ronny we need to go in stage together!
You play pure Melodic Power Metal – very diverse and catchy, but I think you never aimed to for and revolution in this genre – am I right?
Ronny: At first it might see it like a typical power metal album but if you really listen you will find that there is actually some new elements in there. If anyone can find the same chord progression like in the song „All One“ before I am the first one to send that person a T-shirt! 🙂
How much influences have your other bands? I mean “Live Again” has similarities to STRATOVARIUS for example.
Jari: I think it is actually more from the DIONYSUS song „Anima Mundi“.
Ronny and Kaspar wrote that song in DIONYSUS and If you listen to that song you hear where they hot their influences.
You come from so different sounding bands, especially Ragnar and Peter, how hard was it to find a common band sound?
Ronny: Ragnar was the original Guitarist of SAINT DEAMON and I wrote the Music With him so its not that far really. Peter also played in Sinergy which is not that diffrent either. I guess we love Music, we are pretty openminded musicly.
How and when did you create the songs? Was it a complete band-influenced work?
Ronny: No I wrote all Music to the songs with Ragnar during a year i think.
How hard was it to get everyone together to record the songs?
Ronny: Not really, four of the members live just an hour from eachother. Kaspar and Jari just 4 hours away from Ronnys studio in Örebro, Sweden
Everyone is busy with other bands, how possible is it to get a whole tour together this year?
Ronny: Sure, we already booked some festival and will support BLIND GUARDIAN in Sweden!
Is SHADOWQUEST a real band or more some kind of project?
Ronny: It couldnt be more true as a band!
What can you tell me about the title and why did you use a “IV” instead of “For”?
Ronny: For its cooler and more estetic to the eye! 😉
It seems like you had much fun creating the video for “Live Again”, what can you tell me about it and what is it actually about?
Ronny: The song is dedicated to Timo Tolkki who helped me through a rough period during the recordings.
He was at My place recording Elize Ryd for AVALON „Part 1“!
The video is pretty funny but there is a more serious side to the lyrics.
About comming back to life after some major fuck up in your life.
How was it for you to separate the lyrics and vocal lines from BLOODBOUND, to make different feeling?
Patrik: Its was pretty easy since all melodies and lyrics was written already.
Can you actually tell me what happened to DIONYSUS? There was never an official breakup…
Ronny: I really dont know, Me and Kaspar quit Before the tour With JON OLIVA. After that i had no insighte in the band.
You already started a teaser for a crowdfunding-project for a second record, so it seems it will not take too much time to get another great record?
Ronny: No, we already wrote all songs for album number two!
What are your other plans for 2015 and 2016?
Ronny: Play like a dussin gigs and festivals and the in early 2016 record the new album!
