Mit über 20 Jahren Erfahrung und fünf Studioalben im Gepäck sind die ungarischen Black/Pagan-Metaller BORNHOLM keine Unbekannten mehr in der Szene. Heute präsentiert die Band die zweite Single „Spiritual Warfare“ aus ihrem spannenden Napalm Records-Debüt und brandneuen, fünften Studioalbum „Apotheosis“, das am 5. November 2021 erscheint.
Mit „Spiritual Warfare“ präsentieren BORNHOLM eine fast melodische Facette ihres Klangspektrums – sie mischen ihren typischen Black Metal-Sound mit einer Prise Pagan- und Folk-Metal, während das markante, hektische Schlagzeugspiel und das kraftvolle Riffing ihre düstere Seite unterstreichen.
Seitdem BORNHOLM im Jahr 2000 auf der Bildfläche erschienen sind, sind sie eine unaufhaltsame Kraft in der Black- und Pagan-Metal-Szene und tourten mit bekannten Namen wie Ex Deo, Varg, Arkona und vielen anderen. Mit ihrem neuen Album „Apotheosis“ ist die Band bereit, ihre Karriere auf ein neues Level zu heben und mit der düsteren ersten Single „I Am War God“ den Grundstein zu legen. Mit einer Mischung aus markanten, erdverbundenen Black-Metal-Elementen, unbarmherzigem Growling und heroischen, heidnischen Akzenten stellt die Band ihre Vielseitigkeit und klangliche Weiterentwicklung unter Beweis.
Gitarrist Sahsnost erzählt:
„This song is a special song for me, in addition to hitherto unusual musical solutions, it also displays a lyrical apocalyptic vision. It contains biblical references, abstract visions, ritual magic. Behind the scenes of the physical world, warfare always takes place primarily among spiritual forces, which is the real driving force behind. This causes changes in the visible world. Which side is which is not so clear-cut, whether there are any sides at all or just one will. While it’s not a fast track, it still has the fastest part on the album. The cover painting is my work, just like all the visuals related to the album, it was brought to life greatly.“
Apotheosis zeigt nicht nur die klangliche Entwicklung von BORNHOLM, sondern geht auch zurück zu den Ursprüngen der Bandgeschichte und den schweren, oft fast doomigen Einflüssen, gemischt mit dem unverzichtbaren atmosphärisch dunklen und rohen Geschmack. Begleitet von düsteren sakralen Klängen historischen Ausmaßes und einem hypnotisierenden, beschwörenden Gesang läutet der Intro-Track „I Divine“ die dunkle Fahrt ins Nirgendwo ein. Gerade in der Leere zwischen Pagan und Black Metal findet der Sound seine Heimat, wobei Tracks wie „Spiritual Warfare“ und „Black Shining Cloaks“ – letzteres mit einem grandiosen Gitarrensolo von Mike Wead (Mercyful Fate/King Diamond) – inklusive des diabolisch-atmosphärischen Intros „The Key to the Shaft of the Abyss“ die Sanftheit und Extreme der Band repräsentieren. Zusammen mit den fast schon melodischen Anleihen und Akustikgitarreneinsätzen in Kombination mit der puren Rohheit von „To the Fallen“ zeigt die Platte die Vielfalt und klangliche Weiterentwicklung der Band. Der Titeltrack „Apotheosis“ ist eine langsame, heulende Hommage, die aggressiven, kreischenden Gesang und melodiöse, düstere Anekdoten mischt. Der Albumabschluss „Enthronement“ schließt die metaphorische und musikalische Klammer und verleiht dem 52-minütigen Werk einen ehrwürdigen, instrumentalen Abschluss.
BORNHOLM ergänzt:
“So the day has come, the new album is coming! Its title is Apotheosis, which is a Greek originated word meaning deification, divinization and the glorification of a human to a divine level. It contains 11 tracks and drives deeper into our musical world and soul than ever before.
We had to deal with a lot of difficulties both in the studio and in our private life during the making, but somehow something was always guarding the birth of the record. Nothing stopped, not even for a single moment, no matter what happened. It was a great experience to go through this uprising while the world is going into another direction. We didn’t lack anything; fate was with us – so the birth of the record was a sort of magical experience. Step by step, everything was in place in time and, without tolerating the outside world, we built another one for ourselves.”
