Das jüngste Album Kuusumu der Death-Doom-Metal-Band Kuolemanlaakso, das im März 2022 unter großem Beifall der Kritiker veröffentlicht wurde, wird im Dezember durch eine limitierte EP mit drei Songs ergänzt, „Kuolleiden Laulu“.
Sowohl das Album als auch die EP wurden 2021 in der gleichen Studiosession aufgenommen, beide haben gemeinsame lyrische Themen und ein Cover, das auf der Kunst von Evelyn De Morgan (1855-1919) basiert.
Gitarrist und Mastermind Laakso erzählt:
„We knew already when entering the studio that we’re going to record more than an album, as we had plenty of material to work on. When all ten songs were done, it felt natural to compile the album of the heavier epic songs and put the more unusual and catchy tracks on the EP. These three songs have contagious hooks and clean vocals“
„The three songs on Kuolleiden laulu differ from one another considerably, and they present new sides to the band. Lyrically all three songs are fictional stories based on the 10-year volcanic winter that begun in 535 and has been described by historical scholars as ‚the worst time to be alive'“
Der Titeltrack der EP ist das bisher radiotauglichste Stück der Band mit einer glatteren Produktion und einem mitreißenden Refrain sowie weiblichem Gastgesang von Lotta Ruutiainen, die auch auf dem Album zu hören ist. Der langsame und bedrohliche zweite Track „Juuret jalkojeni alla“ ist eine komplexere Komposition, während die EP-Schlussnummer „Rautasiivet“ das gleiche melancholische, aber eingängige Gebiet besucht, das auch Kent und Katatonia bewohnen.
Aleksi Munter (ex-Swallow The Sun und Insomnium) spielt auf der EP die Keyboards. Produziert, aufgenommen, gemischt und gemastert wurde die EP von V.Santura (Triptykon), dem Mann, der für die Produktion aller bisherigen Veröffentlichungen von Kuolemanlaakso verantwortlich ist.
Die EP wird auf Vinyl und CD in einer limitierten Auflage von nur 500 Exemplaren erhältlich sein. Der Titeltrack der EP ist ab sofort auf dem Youtube-Kanal von Svart Records erhältlich, alle DSPs folgen am Freitag, den 30. September.
